イベント内では、出光佐千子館長や学芸員の方から展示について解説をしていただく予定です。作品の解説、見どころをお聞きしつつ、奥深く美しい陶磁器の魅力に迫ります。
This event, we planning to explained about the exhibition by the director, Sachiko Idemitsu, and curators. We will hear explanations of the artworks and highlights of the exhibition, and learn more about the profound and beautiful ceramics.

This event will be a private event specially opened to the NJS by courtesy of Idemitsu Museum of Arts. (Normally the museum is closed on Mondays.)

『惹かれあう美と創造 —陶磁の東西交流』
珍しい造形や異国情緒溢れるデザイン。陶磁器はバラエティーに富み、人々の生活を豊かにしてきました。それらは地域の文化や風土に根ざすだけでなく、アジア、ヨーロッパと人々が交流を重ね、互いに美しい装飾や技術に惹かれあい、魅力的な文化も創造してきました。日本や中国の陶磁、イスラーム陶器、マイセンやセーブル 、さらには富本憲吉（1886－1963）や板谷波山（1872－1963）と、古代から近現代にいたるまで、東西の交流を通して生み出された陶磁器の美の世界へ誘います。
“Intertwining Beauty and Creation - Interinfluence in Ceramic Art of East and West”
Rich in variety, the ceramics have enriched people’s lives with their unique forms and exotic designs. Not only are they rooted in the local cultures and climates, but they have also created fascinating cultures as people from Asia and Europe have interacted and been attracted to each other’s beautiful decorations and techniques. This exhibition invites all to the world of the beauty of ceramics born through the exchange between the East and West throughout the ancient to modern times, including Japanese, Chinese, Islamic ceramics, Meissen and Sèvres porcelain, as well as works of artists like Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963) and Itaya Hazan (1872-1963).
Message from Director, Sachiko Idemitsu / 出光佐千子館長のごあいさつ
当館は、私の祖父・出光佐三（出光興産株式会社創業者、1885-1981）が自ら蒐集したコレクションを後世の人々の教学の助けとなるようにと、1966（昭和41）年に開館いたしました。佐三は、仙厓や唐津などの芸術を愛する中で、「人間尊重」の理念を確信し、芸術を自らの事業の戒めとしてきました。
「私の一生というものは、眼で美術を見て、心で人の美しさをみるというようなことで、いつも美というものにリードされて来たような気がしています。眼で美をみるということは、私が仙厓さんにほれこんでそれを集めたり、唐津焼を集めたりして、いつのまにか出光美術館ができた。人の美しさということは、人間というものはお互いに仲よくして、力をあわせていくということで、それが人間の尊厳であり、平和であり、美だと思います。私はそれを人間尊重といっているわけなんです。」（出光佐三「美と無私の心」）
1981（昭和56）年、二代目館長に就任した出光昭介は、美術を通じて日本人のあり方を示してきた佐三の理念を受け継ぎ、国宝「伴大納言絵巻」の蒐集、コレクションの海外展示など、美術館の充実と国内外での活動に努めてまいりました。
このたび、私は、父・昭介の後を継ぎ、三代目館長に就任いたしました。初代館長の創立時の理念に改めて立ち返り、優れた美術作品の展示と学術研究の発展に今まで以上に寄与してまいる所存です。半世紀の歴史を歩んできた美術館ですが、近隣のビルが新しい観光名所として建て替わる中で、丸の内のオアシスとして変わらずに皆さまから愛される美術館でありつつ、ふらりと初めて立ち寄られた方にも、心を揺さぶる美術との出会いのある美術館をめざして、あらゆる角度から取り組んでゆきたいと思っております。
どなたでも日本・東洋美術の魅力を毎回発見できるよう、刺激的で親しみやすい展示をお届けしたく思っております。
「陶磁の東西交流」は、出光コレクションならではの展覧会です。ヨーロッパで愛された東洋陶磁。その伝播のルート、海のシルクロードを長年にわたり研究された故三上次男先生は出光美術館の理事をされてました。先生のアドバイスにより、出光コレクションは東西の名品が比較できるように成長いたしました。ノルウェー協会の方々にもぜひ名品の競演をお楽しみいただきたいと思います。

The Museum was established by my grandfather, Sazo Idemitsu (1885-1981, also known as the founder of the Idemitsu Kosan, Co. Ltd.）in 1966, with the hope that his own collection would be of help for the future generations of people . Sazo loved paintings of Sengai and Karatsu ceramics. Through his pursuit of art, he confirmed his philosophy of “Respect for Human Beings” and had made art a commandment in his business.
“As I look at art with my eyes and see the beauty of people with my heart, I feel in some way that my whole life has been shaped by beauty. The beauty I saw with my eyes made me fall in love with Sengai and Karatsu ware, and out of this the Museum came into being. The beauty of people I found in human beings getting on well with each other and joining their forces together to do things, and these things are what make for the dignity, peace and beauty of mankind, I believe. These are what warrant our respect for human kind.” (from Sazo Idemitsu, Beauty and the Selfless Mind)
In 1986, Shosuke Idemitsu, who was appointed as the second director of the Museum, inherited the philosophy of Sazo, which was to show the Japanese way through art. The Museum was enriched with the acquisition of National Treasure scrolls of “Illustrated Stories of Courtier Ban Dainagon”, and reinforced with engagement in domestic and international activities including overseas exhibitions.
I have succeeded Shosuke, my father, and become the third director of the Museum. Going back to the founding philosophy of the first director, I would like to contribute more than ever to holding excellent exhibitions of art works and development of academic researches. Although more than half a century has passed since its opening and many buildings in the vicinity have undergone refurbishment and become new tourist attractions, the Museum still is as a place loved by all as an oasis in Marunouchi. I hope the Museum to remain so and wish to continue providing the visitors the encounter with art which shakes their minds.
I am committed to provide friendly and exciting exhibitions through which the visitors can discover the charm of Japanese and Asian arts on every visit to the Museum.
The East-West exchange in ceramic art is a theme unique to the Idemitsu Collection. Oriental ceramics were loved in Europe. The late Dr. Tsugio Mikami, who spent many years researching their transmission to the West by the way of
“Silk Road of the Sea,” was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts. With his advice, the Idemitsu collection has grown to include masterpieces from both East and West. We hope that the members of the Japan Norway Society will enjoy this pageant of ceramic masterpieces.
